The 2024-2025 Budget, announced on July 23 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has allocated Rs.90,958.63 crore to the Union Health Ministry, a 12.9 per cent increase from Rs.80,517.62 crore in the revised estimates for the Health Ministry in 2023-24. Of this, Rs.87,656.90 crore has been allocated to the health and family welfare department and Rs.3,301.73 to the health research department. The allocation for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, has been increased from Rs.4,278 crore to Rs.4,523 crore.
The system however overlooks obesity and mental health allocation towards the budget.

In the past decade, scientific research on meditation's adverse effects has surged. A 2022 study of 953 regular meditators in the US found that over 10% experienced negative impacts lasting at least a month.
A 2020 review of over 40 years of research highlighted anxiety, depression, and more severe issues like psychosis and dissociation as common adverse effects.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) from India was honoured with the 2024 Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion at the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly in Geneva today.
NIMHANS and Professor Bontle Mbongwe of Botswana were joint recipients of the award.

An 18-year-old girl, identified as Bagisha Tiwari from Reva district in Madhya Pradesh, tragically died by suicide in Kota. Bagisha, who had been preparing for the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test (NEET) – UG, allegedly jumped from the ninth floor of a building under Jawahar Nagar police station limits.
This incident occurred just a day after the National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the NEET-UG results.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Wednesday between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Defence to facilitate collaboration between the two ministries in operating a special cell of Tele MANAS — the National Telemental Health Helpline — as a pilot project for two years at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune.
The MoU was signed by Aradhna Patnaik, MD of MoHFW, and Lt General Daljit Singh, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday said that it has received more than one million calls on the Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) helpline since its inception in October 2022.
“The National Tele-Mental Health Program in India has received over one million calls on its Tele-MANAS toll-free number, averaging 3,500 calls per day,” the health ministry said in an official statement.

A Bombay high court bench of Justices N R Borkar and Somasekhar Sundaresan has allowed a 19-year-old to abort her 26-week foetus, citing reproductive autonomy. Earlier, a medical board had reviewed her plea for MTP beyond the permissible 24-week deadline.
Although the foetus had no abnormalities, the medical board advised termination as the pregnancy posed a “grave danger” to the girl’s mental health.

China's Ministry of Education said on Tuesday it was launching a campaign to address issues including excessive homework and bullying in schools, as part of efforts to boost student's mental health.

The state health department has identified 137 students who failed to clear their Class XII board exams in 2024 as being at risk of self-harm. They will receive mental counselling under the Tele-Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) programme.
District mental health authorities make home visits, offer mental health therapy, and encourage these students to take the supplementary examinations, said health minister Ma Subramanian.

Women living with HIV in West Bengal (an eastern state of India) face intersectional stigma due to HIV as well as their other marginalised identities such as being a widow or a sex worker.
