According to a new study, transgender kids who start hormone therapy early have a better response and lead a much wholesome life in terms of mental health as compared to those who start the therapy in adulthood.

Christiana Cruz, MD in the department UNC department of Psychiatry has suggested how educational infrastructure with the help of teachers can bring the necessary change in maintaining mental health therapy for low and medium income countries.
The study took place in Darjeeling with 19 teachers and 36 students in five rural elementary schools. The study suggested that teachers can impact behaviour and child development through consistent effort and mental health needs in real time.

On an average, India has seen the cumulative number of suicides to be around 2,10,000 each year, roughly translating to almost 700 everyday. Statistics also say that for every life that is taken, there are 15 to 20 more attempts as well.

National Crime Records Bureau released a rather shocking data for the year of 2020 where almost 31 children were found to be ending their own loves everyday for the year of 2020. From 2017 to 2019, a total of 24,000 children between the ages 14 and 18 committed suicide and 54% of them were girls.
“In a country like ours, where there are substantially more suicide deaths each year than AIDS-related deaths and maternal deaths (45,000) combined, suicide prevention has attracted considerably less public health attention. Nonetheless, a public health approach to suicide prevention is gaining momentum in India," reads a study by the medical journal The Lancet.
A hope comes in the the form of pedagogical learning model Social, Emotional and Ethical (SEE) Learning, developed in the US by Emory University in collaboration with Dalai Lama.

Research conducted by University of Birmingham, published in BMJ Open Journal, states how gum health is important for further care of mental and cardiovascular health.
Study was conducted on 64,379 patients having different types of gym diseases. The average age was 44 years with 43% males and 30% smokers in the group.
The study indicates that there was an increased chance of having a mental illness by 37%, autoimmune disease by 33% and cardiovascular disease by 18%.

"It is not easy to live with a partner who has mental health issues, and such ailments come with their own challenges for the person facing the problem, and even more so for the spouse. Under the mamdate of Mental Health Review Boards (MHRB), 2017, Maharashtra has formed 8 review boards that shall cover each district in the state.
Starting February 2022, three of the boards will function from the state’s regional mental hospitals in Thane, Pune and Nagpur, while the other five will operate from Kolhapur, Nashik, Akola, Aurangabad, and Latur.
“Before the 2017 Act was implemented, if a patient had to be admitted to a mental health facility, the relatives of the care giver would require an order from the magistrate. Now, the patients can be evaluated by the psychiatrists and the admission has to be informed to the review board,” said Dr Vijay Maskar, a medical officer with the Directorate of Health Services.

In a ruling that was taken in favor of a CRPF officer by quashing the proceedings citing that disciplinary action due to mental health condition is indirect discrimination.
In the ruling, SC stated that any person with mental health condition at a workplace must be given the accommodation and position as per the merits with same pay scale and benefits as any other employee.
"Many people with mental health disorders are willing and able to work. However, socio-structural barriers impede their participation in the workforce. Exclusion from the workforce not only creates conditions of material deprivation, but it also results in isolation and marginalisation," the judgment said.

On Monday, the supreme court ordered for Bhavya Nain, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about 11 years ago from the day, to be a judge in a district court based on clear merits.
A medical board constituted by the SC said that there is nothing to indicate as to why Nain shall not be able to discharge his duties as a judicial officer.
The medical board that comprised of experts in psychiatry and physical medicine and rehabilitation interacted with Nain and found nothing of concern as to why he should not be taking up the duties with appropriate seniority.
As per WHO, bipolar disorder is the sixth leading cause of disability worldwide.

BJP Rajya Sabha member, KC Ramamurthy, on Friday raised the issue and laid down the demand to increase the number of psychiatry seats in the medical colleges in order to meet the demand of mental health services, the nation requires.
During the zero hour, Ramamurthy referred to an ancient Science of yoga called "chittavrittinirodha" meaning 'to calm the oscillation of mind towards stability'.
A survey revealed that about 160 million people in the country need therapeutic help and mental health services while only 30-35 million are seeking it. The survey also reveals that India has a ratio of 0.75 psychiatrists per 1 lakh of population while the required number is 3 per 1 lakh of population.

NIMHAS, starting from February 2022 shall be conducting a mass mental health study for people living in major cities. The study will both keep the effects of pandemic in focus and will double up as a phase two of national mental health survey.

The study says that the children, whose parents are going through depression are more susceptible to mental health issues and more likely to develop illnesses.
Maternal depression is a known risk factor for the children and is observed to have developmental effects on the child, not letting them achieve educational milestones.
Overall, 34.5 per cent of mothers and 18 per cent of fathers/stable men had a diagnosis of depression. In offspring, 4.34 per cent of all children, 2.85 per cent of boys, and 5.89 per cent of girls were diagnosed with depression.

Out of 177 sanctioned positions in 34 districts for psychiatrists, 91 remain vacant, that is more than 50% of positions that are yet to be filled. Out of 85 sanctioned positions for Class I psychiatrists, 69 remain vacant.
“We have been constantly trying to fill the vacant posts, but many of the psychiatrists who come for interviews don’t eventually take up the postings,” said Dr Sadhana Tayade, director of DHS. “In order to tackle the shortage of psychiatrists, we have started mental health training for MBBS doctors from the primary health centres in districts.”

Medical clowning was first introduced by an American doctor Patch Adams who would wear a red nose as he worked in the hospital, humoring his patients, thus creating a relaxed atmosphere with trust.

The researchers at the Iowa State University conducted a study with 3000 people across 50 states, during and outside of lockdown period and the experts measured the time spent sitting and watching TV or exercising.
During the first lockdown, the people who used to do two and a half to five hours of exercising reduced their activity by 32% were found to be more depressed, anxious and lonely.
"We found that, on average, people saw their mental health improve over the eight-week period," explains the study's lead author. "But for people whose sitting times stayed high, their depressive symptoms, on average, didn't recover in the same way as everyone else's."

Aarogya Sahayavani, the 104 helpline of Karnataka has received 42.6 lakh calls pertaining to mental health since its inception and has averted 2062 suicides and helped over 7000 people in counseling.
According to their data, out of 100 calls, about 2 were related to serious mental health issue. In all, the mental health issues accounted for 1.8% of over 2 crore calls received by the helpline.
